Nevermind Watchdown: S6E2, or We’ve Been Banned from a lot of Kids Shows!

Man, this is a really dated panel. You have Roisin Murphy, a member of Moloko, and Dane Bowers, a member of Another Level. This episode couldn’t possibly get anymore 1999.

On the plus side, we do have Nik Kershaw, apparently well known singer-songwriter, and Jeff Green, who we haven’t seen in a while, so I’m not worried.

Phill: “James Brown is usually described as the hardest working man in showbiz, and are the Manic Street Preachers the only three working men in Wales?”
Mark: “We’re gonna have loads of phone calls from Wales as soon as they’ve walked a mile and a half to the phone box…”

After Dane’s anecdote about being banned from Blue Peter.
Mark: ‘I love the pride about being banned by BLUE PETER.”
Phill: “What’djyou do? Dj’you shit on the floor?”

On The Prodigy and Alvin Stardust
Roisin: “Are they both Born Again Christians?”
Mark: “….HAVE A LOOK.”

Mark then just starts screwing with Dane: “Are you the punk one in Another Level? Do you sometimes not dance in time with the others?”

Phill and Nik’s Come on Eileen made me laugh very hard, not because it was spot on, but because Phill used more volume in the brass section, and it really fit.

Jeff, justifying not getting Take on Me: “It’s not everyday you’re expected to sing A-Ha records on television.”
Mark: “Not for A-Ha, anyway…”

#5 in ID Parade, looking very old, is introduced as ‘Return of the Fred-I’. Man, they just keep getting better…

Then, of course, next round of ID Parade, #5 is a guy who keeps staring at them angrily, looking like he wants to kill the panel, and they keep cutting back to him. Not as funny as Athelston, but funny.
Jeff, trying to provoke him, goes “NUMBER FIVE’S GOT A REEEALLY FAT ARSE!”

Next Lines:
Mark: “Spare us the cutter, spare us the cutter…hm, the cry of the Jewish children…”

Mark: “What the hell is wrong with you tonight?”
Phill, taking the line literally: “Well, I think Jeff here is a bit moody tonight…”

Overall: A lighter episode, but not without its moments, including Nik and Roisin forgetting their own songs, Dane proclaiming his band got banned from Blue Peter, and Jeff being…himself. Still, not the best way to follow episode 1.

Best Regular: Mark
Best Guest: Jeff
Best Runner: Another Level on Blue Peter.
